The perplexing phenomenon of individuals emerging from New York City manholes has continued, with another person spotted climbing out of a sewer early Monday in Queens.
Authorities reported that an unidentified man was seen exiting a manhole at Juniper Boulevard South and 74th Street in Middle Village around 4 a.m. The individual, believed to be in his 20s and wearing a red and black bandana, was observed running off with four other men who were reportedly gathered around the sewer opening.
This latest incident follows several similar strange occurrences in recent months. In May, a trio of individuals wearing headlamps were filmed emerging from a manhole near Manhattan's Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. Two months prior to that, separate sightings in Williamsburg and Gravesend captured men exiting manholes, sparking citywide concern.
Investigations into these earlier incidents suggested that those involved were scavenging for valuable items that may have inadvertently ended up in the city's sewer system. It remains unclear if the individuals observed in Queens were engaged in similar activity or if there is any connection between the various manhole emergences.
Police have not yet released further details regarding the identity of the man or his companions in the Queens incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
