Mysterious Spy Plane Flies Over 49ers Game
A U-2 'Dragon Lady' aircraft conducted a rare flyover of Levi's Stadium during a recent NFL game.
Fans attending the San Francisco 49ers game on Monday night observed an unusual sight: a government spy plane, identified as a Lockheed Martin U-2 aircraft, commonly known as the "Dragon Lady," conducted a flyover of Levi’s Stadium. The Beale Air Force Base confirmed the U-2's presence at the game, which the 49ers won 23-17 against the Washington Commanders.
This marks a rare public appearance for the U-2, an elite spy plane developed during the Cold War. The aircraft is capable of flying at speeds exceeding 400 mph and altitudes above 70,000 feet. A similar U-2 aircraft was previously seen flying over an Oakland A's game in 2024.
According to military aircraft trackers, the specific U-2 involved in the flyover, tail number 80-1099, had returned to Beale Air Force Base in California on October 13, following a deployment to RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom. This UK airbase has recently been noted as a potential target of attack due to its role in U.S. operations against Iran.
Historically, U-2 aircraft have been instrumental in significant intelligence-gathering missions, including capturing photographs of Soviet offensive nuclear missiles in Cuba and conducting operations in Korea and the Middle East. The U.S. Air Force states that its fleet of U-2s are based at Beale but are routinely deployed to operational detachments globally.
The reason for the U-2's flyover during the 49ers game remains unexplained, though some social media users speculated it may have been related to the national anthem preceding the game. News outlets reached out to the base for comment regarding the flyover.
