A substantial forested island, estimated to be the size of two football fields, mysteriously appeared in Canada's Williston Reservoir before vanishing, officials have confirmed. The landmass was first spotted in early August in the vast man-made lake located in northern British Columbia.

A local resident captured images and video of the island, which showed trees at its edge appearing to bob in the water. These were shared on social media, gaining viral attention. Initially, officials with BC Hydro, the utility company responsible for the reservoir, were skeptical of the reports, with one spokesperson suggesting the video might have been AI-generated due to its unbelievable nature and the increasing prevalence of such technology.

Confirmation and Disappearance

However, BC Hydro later confirmed the island's existence by examining satellite imagery. A satellite photo dated July 21 showed the island, approximately 105,500 square feet, floating in the reservoir about 60 miles west of the WAC Bennett Dam. Despite this confirmation, subsequent attempts to locate the island using more recent satellite images have been unsuccessful.

"It's disappeared now," a BC Hydro spokesperson told CBC News. "It doesn't mean it's gone to the bottom of the reservoir. It may have returned to a more sheltered area along the shoreline."

Explaining the Phenomenon

BC Hydro suggests the most likely explanation for the island's appearance and disappearance is the current high water levels in the Williston Reservoir, which is full for the first time in 14 years. Officials theorize that during periods of lower water levels over the past decade and a half, driftwood accumulated near the shore, allowing trees to take root in the decomposing debris. As the water level rose this year, these accumulated masses could have become dislodged from the shoreline, forming a floating island.

"There has already been a higher-than-usual number of trees and debris along the reservoir's shores that have been pulled into the lake this year," the spokesperson noted.

BC Hydro does not anticipate the island will cause operational issues but is monitoring the situation for its potential re-emergence. Despite the unsuccessful satellite tracking efforts, the individual who initially shared the photos and video reported seeing the floating island again on Monday evening in the Ospika, a river that flows into the Williston Reservoir.
