Myer Mandates Return to Office for Corporate Staff Amidst WFH Law Debate

Myer, the Australian department store chain, has reportedly instructed its corporate staff to return to the office five days a week, beginning in 2027. This directive coincides with the company's move to a new headquarters located on Dorcas Street in South Melbourne, which will also house employees from its newly acquired Apparel Brands, including Just Jeans, Portmans, Dotti, Jay Jays, and Jacqui E.

Rumors of the cessation of work-from-home (WFH) policies surfaced on the website The Aussie Corporate, citing an all-staff meeting announcement in early October. While Myer has not officially commented, multiple employees have confirmed to the Australian Financial Review that WFH arrangements have been canceled. "This was suddenly communicated to us. It was very shocking," one employee stated, noting that "a few exceptions" exist for individuals living far away, parents, single mothers, or those with health issues.

The new headquarters is designed to accommodate over 1,000 staff and is expected to feature flexible working areas and hot desking rather than assigned desks.

However, Myer's mandate may face challenges if Victoria's proposed WFH laws are enacted. Introduced under former premier Jacinta Allan, the legislation would grant employees the right to work from home two days a week, provided their roles allow for it. The bill passed the lower house in September but is currently paused in the upper house, sent to a parliamentary committee. This pause is expected to extend until after the November state election. New premier Ben Carroll maintains that the laws will come into effect from July 2027, despite pressure from business groups to reconsider them.

Myer has been contacted for comment.
