Music Group Fulfills Late MP's Broadway Dream

A music charity for individuals with learning disabilities has achieved a long-held dream of performing on Broadway, fulfilling the final wish of the late MP Sir David Amess.

The Music Man Project, based in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, provides music education and performance opportunities for children and adults with learning disabilities. While the group has previously performed for royalty and at renowned venues like the Royal Albert Hall and London Palladium, a trip to New York was a specific ambition of Amess, their former president, before his murder in 2021.

David Stanley, the project's founder, stated that fulfilling Amess's dream became his mission after the MP's death. "Following his death, I just made it my mission to fulfil that promise, really, in his memory," Stanley said. He added that the endeavor aimed to commemorate Sir David's advocacy for people with learning disabilities in Southend and across the country through the Music Man Project's growth.

During the New York performance, Stanley paid a heartfelt tribute to Amess. Evoking the late MP's signature style, Stanley spoke into a megaphone, one of Amess's characteristic accessories on the political campaign trail. With emotion in his voice, he declared, "We promised we'd get them to the Broadway and we did it my friend, we did it."

Stanley, who also wrote, produced, and performed in the show, highlighted the significance of the performance as a tribute to Amess's dedication to championing individuals with learning disabilities. The charity's expansion and this international performance underscore its commitment to its cause.
