Luigi Mangione, the individual accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, has requested an unscheduled court hearing. This sudden development has led to speculation that the 28-year-old may seek a plea deal in the federal case.

Mangione's legal team and prosecutors have jointly filed a letter requesting the hearing, which has been approved and is scheduled for Friday morning in Manhattan Federal Court. Mangione faces federal charges including two counts of stalking resulting in death. Previous charges of murder and firearm possession were dismissed.

He is also facing state charges for second-degree murder, multiple counts of weapons possession, and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Mangione has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.

This development follows unsuccessful plea deal negotiations between Mangione's defense and the federal government several months prior. At that time, his attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, accused the prosecution of attempting to sway public opinion against her client.
