Sharif Ahmadzai, the suspect in the murder of Elisabeth-Jane Ross, appeared in court in Athens on Wednesday morning. The court building is located on the same street where Ross's body was discovered.
Reporters gathered outside the courthouse, with the majority being Greek journalists and a smaller contingent of international media. Access to the courtroom itself is restricted to accredited press, as is common in Scotland.
Ahmadzai's arrival at the court was preceded by the release of video footage showing him being transported from police headquarters. This gave the waiting journalists approximately ten minutes to prepare for his appearance.
Instead of a prison van, Ahmadzai arrived in a speeding, dark grey Hyundai i30 hatchback, which entered a secure compound. The vehicle's windows were blacked out, preventing any visual confirmation of Ahmadzai inside.
Later, Daphne, a local news contact who had gained access to the compound, filmed Ahmadzai as he was leaving. The footage captured him being escorted by two individuals.
The case has drawn significant attention from international media and has reportedly horrified residents in the area where Ross's body was found. Ross was reportedly staying at an apartment building on Rethymnou Street in Athens prior to her death.
