Mural Unveiled Honoring Slain FDNY Captain Alison Russo
The artwork in Astoria commemorates the 9/11 first responder, killed in a random 2022 stabbing.
A mural dedicated to FDNY EMS Captain Alison Russo, who was fatally stabbed in a random attack, was unveiled Saturday in Astoria, Queens. The artwork is located at 40-19 20th Ave, across the street from Fire Station 49, where Russo was based.
More than 40 EMS and FDNY officers, along with Russo's family members, attended the dedication ceremony. The mural, created by artists Benny Guerra and Fernando Garcia, features an LED-lit image of Russo, a 9/11 first responder, with a banner that reads "Never Forgotten Forever a Hero."
Russo, 61, was killed on September 29, 2022, during her lunch break. Peter Zisopoulos, 38, was convicted of second-degree murder in connection with her death and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in 2025.
"It’s amazing to have a supportive community. You know, the FDNY being here," Russo's brother, Craig Fuoco, told The Post. "It’s been a long four years, but she’ll never be forgotten."
The building owner, William “Zac” Zaccari, noted that the mural faces Russo's station so that responding EMS workers will see her "smiling at them" as they leave and return. Zisopoulos had resided in the building where the attack occurred.
