The mug shot of Ciarre Campbell, brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell, has been released following his arrest on charges of murder and aggravated assault in the death of his mother, Nateal Campbell. Police found 71-year-old Nateal unresponsive in her Atlanta townhome during a welfare check requested by a family member on Tuesday.
Arrest warrants accuse Ciarre Campbell, 41, of cutting his mother's neck. He also faces charges of possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony, according to jail records. An official cause of death has not yet been released. It remains unclear if Ciarre Campbell resided at the townhome.
Police had previously responded to the residence for a possible mental health issue involving Ciarre Campbell, according to Channel 2 Action News. Lt. Christapher Butler also noted that calls to the location in April involved a possible arson incident and indications of mental health issues with an individual.
The Campbell family has requested privacy during this time. "We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell," the family said in a statement released through ESPN. "While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ."
Calais Campbell, 39, is preparing for his 19th NFL season and signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Ravens in April. The team issued a statement expressing condolences and support for Calais and his family, asking for respect of their privacy. The Arizona Cardinals, where Calais played for 10 seasons, also shared their sympathies.
Calais Campbell, alongside his mother and seven siblings, founded the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, which teaches critical life skills to young people. He was named the 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.
