A professional Muay Thai fighter is being recognized as a hero after stepping in to protect two young women during a road rage incident on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The 19-year-old fighter, Ryan McDonald, intervened when a van driver stopped his vehicle and approached the car occupied by the women on the Bruce Highway.
Dashcam footage captured the van attempting to merge lanes before stopping. The driver then exited his vehicle and approached the women's car, reportedly attempting to open the driver's door. McDonald, who was in nearby traffic, observed the situation and decided to de-escalate the confrontation. "It was just two girls on their own in the car," McDonald told Channel Seven. "And I was thinking this would be a good opportunity to help and use what I know to protect these two girls, or de-escalate the situation."
McDonald and the van driver exchanged words, and both men removed their shirts. However, the situation resolved peacefully when the motorist realized McDonald was an experienced professional fighter. McDonald, who has eight victories in his fighting career, including four by knockout, recounted the interaction: "He came back up to me and was like 'Are you sure you want this?' I was like, 'Yeah.'" The van driver then returned to his vehicle and left the scene.
McDonald stated that preventing the situation from turning violent was the primary goal. "It was the best possible outcome, to de-escalate the [situation]... everybody got home safe that day," he said. The footage of the incident gained significant traction on social media, with millions of views and widespread praise for McDonald's actions.
Commenters on social media lauded McDonald for his bravery in protecting strangers. Some users drew comparisons between the fighter's appearance, including his bleached blonde hair, and the character Guile from the Street Fighter video game series. These comparisons come ahead of a new live-action Street Fighter movie, set to be released in Australian cinemas on October 15, in which WWE superstar Cody Rhodes portrays Guile.
