A Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) construction flagger and mother of three was fatally struck by an oncoming D train late Thursday while working on subway tracks in the Bronx, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station. The worker, identified as Moet McCullum, 41, was standing on the southbound tracks when the train arrived and struck her, according to the MTA.
MCCULLUM had been on the job for 11 months and was responsible for warning train operators of active work zones. The MTA characterized the incident as a tragic loss for the transit agency.
"This is a difficult day. Last night, we tragically lost a member of our MTA family," MTA NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said in a statement. "The incident is under investigation. This morning, I was at the hospital, at the scene, and I met with her family. I ask that we all keep Ms. McCullum and her family in our thoughts and prayers."
The Transport Workers Union Local 100 also expressed its grief, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with our member’s family, loved ones, friends, and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time."
This incident echoes previous tragedies within the MTA. In 2023, MTA flagger Hilarion Joseph, also 57 and on the job for 11 months, was fatally struck by a train at the 34th Street-Herald Square tracks. In another incident in 2024, a 64-year-old MTA flagger suffered a serious head injury after being struck by an F train in downtown Brooklyn while performing track inspections.
