Ms Rachel Pledges to Match Macklemore's $1 Million Donation to Palestinian Relief

Children's entertainer Ms Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin-Accurso, has pledged to match rapper Macklemore's $1 million donation to Palestinian aid organizations. The YouTuber made the announcement on Instagram on Thursday, stating, "I will match Macklemore’s donation and I invite every wealthy white celebrity to match it and speak out against the genocide in Gaza."

Griffin-Accurso expressed a moral obligation to use her privilege and platform to protect children and human rights, citing the killing of over 20,000 Palestinian children. Her statement came after Macklemore announced his intention to donate $1 million, earned from his opening act performances on Ed Sheeran's tour, to aid groups serving Palestinians. Macklemore listed six organizations: Anera, Gaza Soup Kitchen, HEAL Palestine, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Palestine Children's Relief Fund, and UNRWA USA.

Macklemore had previously accused New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft of conspiring with other stadium owners to remove him from the tour after he made a "Free Palestine" statement. He challenged Kraft to match his donation. Shortly after Macklemore's announcement, Kraft stated that Sheeran had urged him to match his own $2 million donation, and Kraft planned to do so.

Sheeran himself had faced backlash after Macklemore was removed from the tour. His other opening acts, including Finneas, Myles Smith, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, and Beoga, subsequently withdrew from their remaining tour dates in protest. Sheeran stated that venues had threatened to cancel shows if Macklemore continued to perform, citing concerns that his political statements were alienating to some audience members and venue owners. He clarified that he himself does not take public political stances but respects Macklemore as an artist.

Macklemore, in his own statement, detailed his conversation with Sheeran and emphasized that the conflict's victims are the Palestinian people. He argued against neutrality in the face of oppression and stated that his intention was not to seek praise but to fulfill a duty. He also addressed the use of antisemitism accusations as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state.

Macklemore's past controversies include an apology in 2014 for wearing a disguise that some condemned as an anti-Semitic caricature. In his apology, he expressed respect for all cultures and denied any intentional offense.

The situation has sparked varied reactions online, with some praising Ms Rachel's generosity and others questioning the specifics of the donation and the call for only "wealthy white celebrities" to match it. Some critics also voiced skepticism about the effectiveness of aid without political change or expressed concern that funds could be misused.
