Member of Parliament Emma Lewell is set to lead an adjournment debate in Parliament to advocate for stricter laws governing Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs).
The campaign follows concerns raised by residents regarding the impact of HMOs on local communities, including issues of behavior and the rapid proliferation of such properties.
One resident, Jason, 53, expressed worries about new flat constructions at the end of his street, fearing potential trouble if the occupants are not well-intentioned. "They just seem to be coming up all over the place," he stated. While not opposed to the existence of HMOs, he voiced apprehension about the conduct of some residents.
South Tyneside Council has affirmed its commitment to managing HMOs. Council leader Paul Mackings stated that the council utilizes all available powers to regulate HMOs and mitigate their impact. "In addition, all HMOs that require a licence must meet clear legal standards and management conditions," Mackings said, adding that enforcement activity is conducted when these standards are not met.
The council also confirmed it employs additional powers to prevent HMO conversions without the necessary planning permission.
