South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa has stated it is "utterly unacceptable" for a convicted people smuggler, formerly described as the "godfather" of French migrant camps, to be living in the county and allegedly working illegally while seeking asylum. The Conservative MP has contacted Leicestershire Police and plans to raise the issue with the Home Office.
A BBC investigation traced Twana Jamal to Blaby, a constituency office of Costa's, and identified two mini-marts linked to him. Costa expressed strong disapproval of Jamal's presence in the community, stating that the individual "should not be in Blaby, should not be in this country."
"He is a convicted human trafficker and the fact that he's come to our home, to Blaby, in our local community, and is exploiting the system by working apparently illegally because he doesn't have any settled status here, is utterly unacceptable," Costa said. He also commented that Jamal opening a business next door to his constituency office "speaks volumes about the character of this individual."
Costa urged local residents to boycott the shops associated with Jamal.
