Mourinho Suggests Vinicius Jr. Should Have Left Real Madrid for a More Respectful Environment

Jose Mourinho stated that he believes Vinicius Jr. should have departed Real Madrid last summer to play in a league where he would receive more respect. The Portuguese manager's comments come as the Brazilian winger has faced persistent racial abuse in Spain since joining Real Madrid from Flamengo in 2018.

Mourinho suggested that if he were in Vinicius Jr.'s position, he would have "forced a move to a country where he'd be respected." However, he acknowledged that the player's "loyalty to Real Madrid and love for the club" led him to stay. Mourinho added that Vinicius Jr. "believes things can improve" and continues to maintain a positive demeanor, stating, "Nothing and no one can take it away from him."

The manager lauded Vinicius Jr. as a "fantastic guy" and expressed his high regard for him, noting that the player "always manages to live and survive with a smile." Mourinho has previously defended the player, expressing confidence that he would overcome his current challenges.

Arsenal had reportedly inquired about the winger, with suggestions that they were prepared to offer him a contract worth £18.5 million per season, which would have made him the highest earner at the club. Vinicius Jr.'s current contract with Real Madrid expires at the end of the season. The club has indicated that he must lower his salary demands for an extension to be agreed upon, though they remain willing to make him their joint-highest earner alongside Kylian Mbappe.

Vinicius Jr.'s tenure at Real Madrid has seen him score 129 goals in 386 appearances. However, his recent form has been a point of scrutiny, with one goal and three assists in ten matches this season. He is also serving a four-match suspension for pulling Villarreal player Nathan Saliba's hair. His future at the club has been a subject of discussion, particularly following Kylian Mbappe's arrival in 2024, which shifted the power dynamic within the team. The possibility of Real Madrid rebuilding and heading in a new direction exists if they fail to secure significant silverware for a third consecutive season.

If a contract agreement is not reached, Real Madrid may consider selling Vinicius Jr. in the January transfer window to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer. The player reportedly received a €1 billion five-year contract offer from Al Ahli last year, and Liverpool was also rumored to be interested earlier in the window, though they are not considered to be in the running for a player reportedly earning around £520,000 per week.
