The manager also criticized the Refereeing Appointments Committee, suggesting that the selection of a 41-year-old referee without international experience for a derby was questionable. He alleged that the VAR official, Trujillo, also had a history with Real Madrid and questioned his involvement in the decision-making process.

Mourinho's criticism extended to specific incidents, including a tackle by Cristian Romero on Bellingham that resulted in a yellow card, and a challenge by Kang-In Lee on Fede Valverde that went unpunished. Real Madrid's official statement echoed these sentiments, labeling Ortiz Arias's refereeing as "VERY TERRIBLE" and highlighting the failure to send off Romero and Lee.

Despite his strong condemnation of the officiating, Mourinho acknowledged his players' efforts in the first half.
