Mountain Bikers Narrowly Escape Massive Wildfire in Southern California
Terrifying video captures cyclists encountering a wall of flames as the fast-moving Norte Fire spreads rapidly through Orange County.
A group of mountain bikers experienced a frightening encounter with the rapidly spreading Norte Fire in Orange County, California, as flames engulfed hillsides near the Las Ramblas trail in San Juan Capistrano. Video footage shows a wall of fire rapidly approaching as cyclists traversed the area.
One of the bikers, who was with their family, described the fire's swift progression, noting how it separated them from companions. "The fire spread so quickly!!!! My friend was able to catch a glimpse of our crossing, before her meta glasses turned off. Both exits were just as bad. The heat on our faces was terrifying. Fires spreading fast, making it difficult to breathe and see. Thankful we made it out," the group stated in an Instagram post.
The Norte Fire ignited around 11:30 a.m. on Friday and quickly grew to 465 acres within three hours, according to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) and Cal Fire. By Saturday morning, the fire had consumed 570 acres.
The blaze led to evacuations in several zones of San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. The OCFA confirmed that six homes sustained damage or were destroyed. Among the injured were two firefighters; one suffered from heat exhaustion, and the other sustained an unspecified injury.
Crews worked through the night to contain the fire, focusing on preventing its spread and extinguishing hot spots. "Our number one objective is safety of the community and our firefighters, and when it’s safe to do so, our second priority would be to get people back into their homes," stated Mike Yeun, battalion chief for the OCFA.
Southern California was battling multiple wildfires over the weekend. The Bryson Fire in Malibu had burned 147 acres with 52% containment by Saturday morning. In Azusa, the Peak Fire had scorched 43.3 acres with 41% containment. Near San Diego, the Henderson Fire had burned over 3,100 acres with 20% containment.
