A Sydney mother has issued a warning to parents after her six-year-old son found a syringe and needle inside the pocket of a new pair of trousers purchased from Kmart. The incident occurred shortly after the child put on the pants, which were bought from the Kmart store at Nepean Square shopping centre in Penrith.
"When he put them on, he reached into the pocket and immediately came out and told us there was a syringe or needle," the mother, identified as Hannah, stated on social media. She reported that her son was not injured by the discovery, expressing relief that he alerted the adults immediately.
These were brand new pants, straight from the store, not second-hand clothing, Hannah emphasized.
The mother shared her experience to caution other parents, advising them to inspect the pockets of new clothing before allowing children to wear them, especially younger children who might explore pockets. She indicated plans to report the incident to Kmart, describing the presence of a needle or syringe in new clothing as a serious safety concern.
This incident follows a similar discovery made by another mother several months prior. In November of the previous year, a mother in the Northern Rivers region found two small bags containing "unknown substances" in the pocket of a children's hoodie purchased from a different Kmart store. One bag reportedly featured smiley face emojis, and the other had a marijuana leaf graphic. The mother noted that powder was still present in the bags and expressed concern about a child potentially finding them.
She reported this discovery to the management of Lismore Square Shopping Centre, and the matter was also reported to local police. Both Kmart and the Daily Mail were contacted for comment regarding these claims.
