Mother, Three Others Appear in Court Over Newborn's Murder

A mother and three other Slovakian nationals have appeared in court charged with the murder of a newborn baby who was allegedly stabbed 15 times and discovered on a washing machine. The infant, identified as Maria Skopova, died on the day of her birth in Sheffield.

Maria was found wrapped in a towel inside a blue bag in an outbuilding at a property in Holywell Heights, Wincobank, on August 30. A post-mortem examination revealed she sustained 33 wounds to her face, torso, and back.

Andrea Skopova, 20, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court alongside Peter Horvath Jr, 19, his father Peter Horvath Sr, 38, and his mother Nina Horvathova, 37. All four are charged with Maria's murder, as well as causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice by allegedly cleaning the scene. A fifth defendant, a 15-year-old girl who cannot be named for legal reasons, faces a charge of perverting the course of justice.

No pleas have yet been entered. A provisional trial has been scheduled for April 12 of next year, expected to last between six and seven weeks. The court was informed that a significant amount of bodycam and dashcam footage is to be analyzed.

During the hearing, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, the Recorder of Sheffield, addressed those in the public gallery and the defendants about maintaining order. He emphasized the court's solemnity, stating it was not a place for emotional outbursts or distractions and warned that individuals misbehaving would be removed or, in the case of defendants, could be sent to the cells.

Maria was discovered after police responded to concerns about the safety of an infant at the Holywell Heights property. Prosecutors had previously stated that Skopova was Maria's mother and that the identity of the baby's father was unknown, with Horvath Jr not believed to be the father.

Skopova, of Robey Street in Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, and Horvath Jr, Horvath Sr, and Horvathova, all of Holywell Heights, were remanded in custody. The 15-year-old girl was remanded in youth custody. A plea hearing is set for December 14. An inquest into Maria's death has been opened and adjourned.

Two other women, aged 26 and 37, arrested on suspicion of murder, remain on bail.
