Mother Suspected in Fatal Stabbing of Child, Two Critically Injured in Australia

Police have confirmed that a mother is the primary suspect in a stabbing attack that killed one child and left two others in critical condition in the Blue Mountains, Australia. The woman, aged in her 40s, is also in critical condition.

Cyclists discovered the woman and three young children with stab wounds on Waratah Road in Valley Heights early Sunday afternoon. One child died at the scene despite immediate first aid from witnesses while awaiting emergency services. The children were found inside a car partially pulled into a vacant block near a fire trail, with the woman located nearby.

Paramedics treated all three victims at the scene before transporting them to Westmead Hospital and Westmead Children's Hospital. They remain in critical condition and have undergone surgery.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna described the incident as part of a horrific and tragic weekend in New South Wales, noting three other women were allegedly murdered within a 12-hour period on Saturday. "It's unfathomable," he stated.

Superintendent John Nelson of the Blue Mountains Police Area Command confirmed that the father of the children had been notified and was at work when he received the news. Nelson added that the woman had no prior contact with police and that investigators are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident. The children are all under five years old.

Nelson praised the civilians who intervened to provide medical assistance, acknowledging the traumatic nature of the scene. He also assured that responding officers would receive support.

Blue Mountains councillor Darren Rodrigo called the news "absolutely horrendous and tragic," extending condolences to the family and expressing gratitude to the community members and first responders.

The investigation is ongoing, focusing on the weapon used and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police stated the incident is related to domestic violence.
