Mother of Two Killed After SUV Plunges Into Restaurant Patio
A 93-year-old driver lost control of an SUV, striking diners outside a Jersey Shore restaurant and killing one woman.
A fatal incident occurred Saturday morning when a 93-year-old driver, attempting to park outside Meg's Grill in Lavallette, New Jersey, pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. The SUV then plowed into a crowd of diners on the restaurant's patio, killing Ursula Keating, 56, and injuring seven others.
Keating, a mother of two and the wife of Silverton Volunteer Fire Company Chief John Jr. Keating, was with her daughter at the time of the tragedy. She was described by friends and colleagues as a 'warm,' 'affectionate,' and 'beloved' member of her community.
Seven individuals who sustained injuries were transported to local hospitals. The driver of the SUV, whose identity has not been released, suffered minor injuries. The vehicle also struck the neighboring Cornerstone Wines and Liquors.
Community members have rallied around Keating's family, establishing a meal donation page to support her husband, John, and their two children, Jordyn and Colin. A statement from Meg's Grill on Facebook offered condolences, noting Keating's daughter's bravery during the incident.
"She held your hand and kept you calm. And never left your side. She showed immense bravery and selflessness," the restaurant wrote, addressing Keating's daughter. "I know there are no words that can help you in this time. But there is love for you everywhere. I hope your hearts can heal."
Everett E. Garnto Jr., the mayor of Garfield, Keating's hometown, expressed the city's grief over the "tragic loss." He highlighted her role as a wife, mother, and friend, and noted her husband's dedication as a retired police lieutenant and active volunteer firefighter.
"Her life was tragically cut short in the horrific incident in Lavallette, leaving her family and all who loved her facing unimaginable heartbreak," Garnto stated. The couple had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
Keating also worked as a senior administrative and medical assistant at Central Jersey Hand Surgery, where colleagues remembered her for her kindness and warmth. "She brought kindness and warmth to those around her. Her loss is deeply felt by all of us who had the privilege of working alongside her and knowing her," a colleague wrote.
Meg's Grill announced it would be closed on Sunday and Monday following the incident, stating, "But I can't say the same for our hearts."
It remains unclear if any charges have been filed against the 93-year-old driver.
