The mother of the 16-year-old gunman who carried out a mass shooting at an Oregon elementary school insisted her son was "a good boy," the New York Times reported. Shauntai May Nickerson, the mother of John J. Griffin II, who killed three students and one teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday, spoke to reporters outside her apartment.
"I’m sorry," Nickerson said, according to the report. "I miss him."
Griffin was armed with a pump-action shotgun, which was allegedly bought by his mother, when he opened fire in a special education classroom at the school. Police and relatives stated that a father, Kaylub Giamanco, followed Griffin into the school and fatally shot him.
When asked about how her son obtained the weapon, Nickerson declined to comment. "If I could have prevented this, I would have," she stated.
