Mother of Four Dies After Paint Canister Explodes on Garden Fire

Katie Louise Marshall, 32, a mother of four from Newport, Wales, died on September 24, two months after suffering severe burns in an incident on June 26. The explosion occurred when a paint canister, contained within a bin bag that Ms. Marshall had thrown onto a garden fire, detonated.

She sustained burns to approximately 50 percent of her body and was initially taken to Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran. From there, she was transferred to the specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. Due to significant respiratory failure, Ms. Marshall was subsequently moved to Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Friends and family remembered Ms. Marshall, describing her as an "amazing mum and partner" with an "infectious laugh." They held a memorial event the day after her death, releasing pink fireworks and balloons in her honor. Tributes shared on social media highlighted her generosity and happy disposition.

Ms. Marshall frequently shared photos of her children on social media, documenting family outings and celebrations. In 2019, she requested donations to the charity Children with Cancer for her birthday, stating the cause was important to her.

An inquest into Ms. Marshall's death, overseen by Senior Coroner Caroline Saunders, is scheduled to continue on June 9, 2027.
