Mother of Four Dies After Accidental Explosion During Bonfire Incident

A mother of four died in June from complications including flash burns and pneumonia after a paint canister inside a bin bag she threw onto a garden fire exploded, an inquest has heard. Katie Louise Marshall, 32, sustained burns to approximately half of her body when the bonfire in Newport, Gwent, erupted on June 26. A neighbor discovered Marshall in the garden and contacted emergency services, who transported her to Grange University Hospital. She was later transferred to Morriston Hospital's specialist burns unit in Swansea before being moved to Bristol Royal Infirmary due to significant respiratory failure. Marshall died on September 24.

The inquest at Gwent Coroner's Court was informed that her death was attributed to bacterial pneumonia, inhalation injury, and flash burns. Friends paid tribute to Marshall, releasing pink balloons and fireworks in her memory. Louise Davies, a friend, expressed devastation at Marshall's death, stating, "Life is so cruel. So gutted for Katie's family, friends and everyone who knew and loved her too." Another friend, Tanisha Lloyd, recalled Marshall's impact on many people, saying, "You definitely left your mark in people's hearts." Julia Rees described Marshall as "beautiful inside and out" and extended condolences to her "precious girls, partner, family and absolutely everyone who had the pleasure of knowing you."

Senior coroner Caroline Saunders announced that the inquest would resume on June 9, 2027, at 11 a.m.

Friends said Ms Marshall was 'beautiful inside and out' and sent tributes to her daughters
