An 81-year-old California woman has lost both her legs after a suspected drunk driver crashed into the outdoor dining area of a Los Angeles restaurant on July 7. Cristina Vargas was eating with her daughter, Gabriela Vargas, outside Los Cinco Puntos Mexican Deli in Boyle Heights when the incident occurred.

Surveillance footage showed three people dining when a vehicle veered onto the sidewalk and into their area, leaving them little time to react. Cristina Vargas sustained severe injuries that led to the amputation of both her legs. Her daughter, Gabriela, also suffered injuries, including a head laceration requiring staples and a leg injury that affects her mobility.

Before the crash, Cristina Vargas was an active woman who enjoyed dancing, attending church, playing bingo, and spending time with her family. Her daughter described her as a once-active mom whose life has been dramatically altered by the collision.

Gabriela Vargas has remained by her mother's side throughout her recovery. She expressed the emotional toll of witnessing her mother's life change so significantly due to the loss of her legs. The family has found strength in the support and well wishes from the community.

Cristina Vargas is leaning on her faith as she adapts to her new reality. Her daughter is committed to supporting her, even envisioning her mother driving a small electric car in the future.
