Mother Kills Two, Injures Dozens After Crashing Truck into Kansas Youth Soccer Game
A 34-year-old mother was taken into custody after her pickup truck plowed into a soccer match, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man.
A horrific incident at a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, resulted in the deaths of a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, with nearly a dozen others injured, after a truck plowed into the field. The driver, identified as a 34-year-old mother, was seen being detained by police following the event on Saturday afternoon.
The unidentified woman's black pickup truck drove onto the field at Stryker Sports Complex shortly before 3:30 p.m., striking multiple people. Bystanders reportedly pulled the driver from the vehicle, and footage captured her being placed in handcuffs and escorted to a patrol car. The driver allegedly exclaimed, "Oh my God, oh my God, what have I done?" according to reports.
The deceased victims were identified as six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Schafer's family has declined to speak with the media. Among the injured were two five-year-olds, a girl and a boy, and a nine-year-old girl. The remaining injured individuals range in age from 28 to 68.
According to police, the woman, a native of Garden City, was released on Sunday afternoon pending toxicology tests and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. No charges have been filed at this time as investigators continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Witnesses described the scene as one of sheer panic. Erica Case, who was at the complex watching her nine-year-old play, recounted seeing debris flying through the air and realizing that bodies, not just objects, were being hit. "I lost it because it wasn’t just adults. It was also children," she said.
Another witness, David Griekspoor, described the sound as being "like small gunfire" before seeing the truck moving through a line of people. Vanessa Trammell, whose son was playing on an adjacent field, said she witnessed the truck drive across the neighboring field, striking several people, describing the event as "pure panic."
Bystanders and emergency responders provided assistance to those affected. "There are a lot of silent heroes that I know experienced much worse than I did, having to do mouth-to-mouth or CPR on somebody that’d been ran over by a truck," Case added.
Two of the driver's children were reportedly in the back of the pickup truck at the time of the incident, and a third child had been playing in a game on a different field. Police have not commented on whether they believe the driver was intoxicated, suffered a medical episode, or if the vehicle had a mechanical issue.
Wichita Police Department Chief Joe Sullivan expressed condolences to the victims' families, stating, "What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy." He added that investigators are working to understand exactly what happened.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu also shared her grief, and former President Donald Trump commented on the tragedy during a rally, offering prayers to the victims and their families and stating a desire to "get to the bottom of what happened."
The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced that play has been suspended for the flag football state championship following the accident. A memorial has been set up at the sports complex to honor the victims.
