Mother Identifies Daughter's Killer, Demands Justice After Seven Months Without Arrest
A heartbroken mother in suburban Chicago is pleading for action after her teenage daughter was fatally shot in her own bedroom, and the suspect, who she says she knows, has not been charged.
Seven months after her 16-year-old daughter Lilly Bova was shot and killed inside her Northbrook, Illinois, bedroom, her mother, Christie Bova, insists she knows the identity of the shooter and is demanding justice.
Lilly was found with a gunshot wound around 11 a.m. on March 28 by her older sister. She was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police were informed that a suspect, accompanied by an attorney, turned themselves in later that day. However, the suspect invoked their Fifth Amendment right and refused to speak, and no charges have been filed.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office stated that authorities "believe we know what happened in this case" and that they have enough evidence to support criminal charges. However, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office has cited a lack of sufficient evidence to bring formal charges.
Christie Bova told Inside Edition that the shooter is a boy her daughter had feelings for, whom she had allowed into her bedroom that day. "He came out of the room, he had the gun in his hand, he had blood on the bottom of his shirt and he said, 'I'm sorry, don't go in there,'" Bova recounted. She emphasized her belief that the case is straightforward, pointing out that "three people in a house - one left with a gun, one was her sister, and one is no longer with us."
Surveillance footage obtained by Inside Edition appears to show the suspect changing his clothing on a street shortly after the incident. The footage depicts the individual discarding a sweatshirt behind bushes before being picked up. Investigators were later seen searching those same bushes, but the murder weapon has not been recovered.
Despite the mother's certainty and the sheriff's office's assertion of having enough evidence, the State Attorney's Office stated it would review any new information that comes to light. Christie Bova expressed her frustration, stating, "This can't be the way that it ends, with zero justice. He killed her, and he's getting away with it."
Lilly Bova was remembered by classmates and friends as a kind-hearted and optimistic individual. Glenbrook South High School Principal Barbara Georges described her as having a "quiet spirit" but loving deeply and possessing a maturity beyond her years. A friend, Emmett Kessler, told ABC 7 that Lilly was a "good person" and that her absence was palpable within the school. Another friend, Samuel Thompson, told Fox News that she "always had a smile on her face."
