A mother in Sydney is engaged in a legal and emotional battle with a hospital, advocating to keep her seven-month-old son on life support as they seek more time and options for his care. The infant, Liam, was recently diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress Type 1 (SMARD1), an extremely rare and fatal inherited neuromuscular disorder that causes severe muscle weakness and breathing difficulties in babies. The condition has an average life expectancy of less than 13 months, and there is no known cure.

Liam, who was born six weeks premature, has faced multiple health complications throughout his short life. His parents, Thuy Linh Phan and Hoang, were recently informed of the hospital's intention to withdraw his ventilator and life support, as specialists believe the burdens of ongoing treatment may now outweigh the benefits.

In response, Ms. Phan and her partner have requested additional time with their son, transparency in the decision-making process, and the opportunity to obtain independent medical advice to explore all possible care options before any irreversible decisions are made. Ms. Phan stated that Liam remains stable and continues to receive life-sustaining treatment, and the family is cherishing every moment, ensuring he is surrounded by love and comfort.

Liam has been described as a sweet child who enjoys music, stories, cuddles, and his mother's singing. Despite his health challenges, he continues to smile and make eye contact, bringing joy to those around him.

The family hopes to look back knowing they did everything they could for their son and wishes to raise awareness about rare diseases and the importance of parental involvement in critical care decisions.

The hospital has stated it cannot comment on the matter due to ongoing legal proceedings. Ms. Phan advised other parents in similar situations to ask questions, seek support, and remember the importance of their voice in their child's care, emphasizing that no family should face such moments alone.

An online fundraiser established to assist Liam's family with legal, administrative, and medical expenses has garnered nearly $25,000. Additionally, a petition urging authorities to pause the withdrawal of Liam's life support while further advice is sought has collected close to 5,000 signatures.

Ms. Phan expressed deep gratitude for the widespread support, stating that the kindness shown has provided hope, strength, and the courage to persevere during this difficult time.
