Mother Defends Daughter Charged in School Beating, Citing Bullying
An 11-year-old Florida girl faces aggravated battery charges after a cafeteria fight, but her mother claims her daughter was the victim of prolonged harassment.
The mother of an 11-year-old Florida girl charged with assaulting a classmate in a school cafeteria has asserted that her daughter is the true victim, alleging weeks of persistent bullying preceded the incident. The violent encounter occurred late last month at Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach.
The accused girl faces a second-degree felony aggravated battery charge. Her mother described her daughter as an honor roll student with perfect attendance, telling WPLG, "She's not a criminal, she's a child." The mother added, "She made a mistake, but she is a child that felt the need to defend herself."
According to the mother, whose name is withheld to protect her daughter's privacy, she repeatedly approached school officials about alleged harassment her daughter endured in the weeks leading up to the attack. She believes the violence could have been avoided and that her daughter reached a breaking point. While acknowledging the difficulty of viewing the incident's video, the mother stated she does not condone her daughter's actions and expressed frustration that her child is facing serious criminal charges while the circumstances of the confrontation have received less attention.
In contrast, the victim's family has presented a different account. The mother of the injured girl reported that her 11-year-old daughter suffered a concussion and was punched more than 40 times before the assault was stopped. The victim has reportedly been too frightened to return to school following the beating. "I was just grateful that she was alive," the victim's mother told WPLG, becoming emotional as she recounted the event.
An attorney representing the injured girl has also alleged that the school failed to provide adequate protection, despite allegedly receiving advance notice of an impending assault. These competing narratives have raised questions regarding the actions taken by school officials to prevent the confrontation.
District officials stated that the school followed its disciplinary procedures and referred the incident to law enforcement. The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office initially treated the case as a misdemeanor battery offense and referred it to a juvenile diversion program. However, prosecutors later filed the more serious second-degree felony aggravated battery charge after the victim's mother requested prosecution and authorities evaluated the extent of her daughter's injuries.
The mother of the accused girl is urging the judge to consider the events that led to the beating, rather than judging her daughter solely based on the widely circulated video footage. She maintains her daughter was struggling with harassment and that school officials had opportunities to intervene before the situation escalated to violence.
