A dispute over noise escalated to a fatal confrontation in House Springs, Missouri, when an elderly neighbor shot and killed a mother and her teenage daughter before taking his own life. The incident occurred on the evening of July 25, when 73-year-old Robert Winkelman approached the home of Jessica Lashly, 38, and her 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, to complain about noise.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Winkelman confronted Lashly outside her residence. After Lashly made a comment that angered him, Winkelman produced a gun and shot her in the head. When Greer rushed to her mother’s aid, Winkelman also shot the teenager in the head.
Both Lashly and Greer were transported to local hospitals in critical condition and died on July 27. Winkelman was also hospitalized in critical condition after turning the gun on himself when deputies attempted to detain him at the scene. He died from his injuries on Sunday, August 2.
Prior to his death, authorities had obtained a no-bond arrest warrant for Winkelman. He faced charges of assault and armed criminal action. His death means he will not face trial.
Jersey Greer, a rising high school senior and lacrosse player, was remembered by friends and teammates for her humor, kindness, and supportive nature. In her final act, she was attempting to help her mother. Her family stated on social media that her organ donation would provide a chance at life for six patients.
"Jersey’s last moments, she was trying to save my mom," said Justice Greer, Jersey's twin sister, who was not home at the time of the shooting. "It just shows how brave she is, and I hope I can be half as brave as she is."
