A domestic dispute in Rittman, Ohio, escalated into a violent confrontation that left a mother, her 13-year-old daughter, and a police sergeant dead, with the perpetrator also taking his own life. The incident occurred around 9:54 p.m. on Sunday when Rittman Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting a break-in and shots fired at a residence on Chippewa Trail.

Upon arrival, officers were met with gunfire from Brandon Fazekas, 38, identified as the ex-boyfriend of Christine McWilliams, 44. Fazekas was later found dead inside the home with a gunshot wound consistent with suicide. McWilliams and her daughter, McKinley, 13, were also found deceased at the scene.

During the exchange of gunfire, Sergeant Scott Ries, a 10-year veteran of the Rittman Police Department, was fatally shot. His death marks the first line-of-duty fatality in the department's history. Four Medina County sheriff's deputies who responded to the incident were also shot; two were hospitalized, and two were treated at the scene. A police K-9 named Vick sustained injuries from bullet fragments.

Neighbors reported hearing a large volume of shots fired, estimating between 70 and 75 shots during the incident. The home sustained significant damage from the gunfire. According to a neighbor, McWilliams and Fazekas had broken up approximately two months prior, and McWilliams had changed her locks about three weeks before the shooting.

Christine McWilliams was a realtor and mother of two. GoFundMe campaigns have been established to support her son, Landon, who was not home at the time of the shooting, and to cover funeral expenses for McWilliams and McKinley. As of Wednesday evening, these fundraisers had garnered over $21,000 toward their goals.

Authorities are investigating the events of Sunday night. Public records indicate Fazekas had prior arrests in Wayne and Medina counties, including charges for breaking and entering, vandalism, and forgery, as well as a probation violation that resulted in jail time. He also faced minor charges in Wayne County. The Rittman mayor expressed the city's grief, stating that the community is mourning the loss of three lives woven into its fabric.

A candlelight vigil was held on Monday evening in remembrance of Sgt. Scott Ries, who is survived by his wife and two daughters. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the incident.
