Mother Clutches Teddy Bear as Police Investigate Baby Daughter's Suspicious Death

A grieving mother was seen clutching her baby daughter's teddy bear on Wednesday, a day after the infant died in suspicious circumstances, prompting a homicide investigation. Emergency services were called to a property in Redan, near Ballarat, on Sunday where an eight-month-old baby was found unresponsive. Paramedics attempted to revive the child, performing CPR, before taking her to a Ballarat hospital. The infant was later transferred to a Melbourne hospital, where she died on Tuesday.

Homicide squad detectives have interviewed a 23-year-old man in connection with the death. He has since been released pending further inquiries. On Wednesday morning, plain-clothed detectives visited the home from which the baby was taken to hospital.

The child's mother was observed at the door holding the infant's teddy bear before leaving the property, accompanied by another man. Neighbors reported that the couple had lived at the rented three-bedroom home for less than a year and were rarely seen. One neighbor noted that the man seen on Wednesday had traveled with the child to the hospital in an ambulance and was not detained by police at the time.

Police have stated that the exact circumstances surrounding the baby's death are yet to be determined and that detectives from the Homicide Squad are leading the investigation. The area was cordoned off with a crime scene established on Sunday, and officers conducted door-to-door inquiries. Multiple police cars and ambulances were present at the scene.

Neighbors described the couple as quiet and private, stating they knew little about them. Some residents noted they had never seen the couple and were unaware they had a baby living in the house. One neighbor recalled the couple mentioning a trip to the U.S. for Christmas shortly after they moved in, asking for mail to be collected.
