Mother and Son Found Dead in Georgia Yard After Collapsing
Authorities are investigating the deaths of an 89-year-old mother and her 68-year-old son who were discovered in their Sumter County yard, a week after they are believed to have collapsed.
Authorities in southwest Georgia are investigating the deaths of a mother and son who were found dead in their yard. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office received a call for a welfare check on September 22, prompting officers to visit a residence off Highway 118 in the Leslie area.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered a deceased female. A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of a deceased male near the residence. The victims were identified as Emma R. Handler, 89, and William Womack, 68. Both were residents of the home.
Investigators believe the incident occurred approximately a week prior to the discovery of the bodies. According to reports, the son was cutting grass with a push mower when he collapsed. His mother is believed to have gone outside to assist him and subsequently collapsed as well.
Autopsies are currently being conducted to determine the exact cause of death for both individuals. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office is collaborating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Sumter County Coroner’s Office on the ongoing investigation. Sheriff Eric Bryant stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest foul play, but emphasized that the investigation remains active.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to the families of Ms. Handler and Mr. Womack.
