A 31-year-old mother, Kenya Glasgow, and her two-year-old daughter, Kennedi, were killed after being struck by lightning on Sunday afternoon in Margate, Florida.
The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. as a thunderstorm unfolded. A local resident discovered Glasgow and Kennedi on the sidewalk in the 7900 block of Northwest 1st Street and called 911. The resident reported that both victims had burn marks and were emitting smoke. According to the resident, Glasgow also had two "holes" in her chest.
Margate Police Department and Margate Fire Rescue responded and attempted CPR. Despite their efforts, both Glasgow and her daughter were pronounced deceased shortly after being transported to North Broward Medical Center and Broward Health Medical Center, respectively.
Kenya Glasgow's husband, Kam Glasgow, described the tragedy as "horrific luck," noting the odds of being struck by lightning are approximately 1 in 1.2 million. He remembered his wife as his "best friend" and spoke of the profound loss for their surviving twin daughter, Kensli, who now must grow up without her identical sister.
Thunderstorms are common in South Florida, particularly during the summer rainy season which runs from June through September. However, fatalities from lightning strikes are rare.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. The Margate Police Department extended its condolences to the victims' family and loved ones.
