Mother Admits Killing Three Children in Bristol
A mother has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her three young children, who were found stabbed to death in their Bristol home in February 2024. She has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.
Yasmeen Ali, 44, admitted to killing her children – Fares Bash, seven, Joury Bash, three, and nine-month-old Mohammed Bash – at their family home in the Sea Mills area of Bristol. She also attempted to take her own life at the property.
During a hearing at Bristol Crown Court, Ali pleaded guilty to three charges of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. Mr Justice Linden sentenced her to an indefinite hospital order, citing psychiatric evidence that her actions were "almost entirely attributable to mental disorder."
The judge extended condolences to Ali and her husband, Mr. Bash, stating that the victim impact statement highlighted the profound and lasting tragedy for the family. He noted that he had reviewed detailed reports from three forensic psychiatrists, as well as an independent report on Ali's care and treatment by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, which included an apology for failings.
Ali, originally from Sudan, moved to the UK in 2018 to join her husband, Alfil Bash. The court heard that the couple's relationship had become strained, particularly during Ali's third pregnancy. Issues arose concerning finances, with Ali reportedly telling family members her husband was gambling and became ill-tempered. Concerns about possible domestic violence were raised by the children's primary school to social services in September 2023, with Ali reporting an attack by her husband while breastfeeding.
Police were called to the family home in December 2023, and Mr. Bash was arrested after Ali's daughter reportedly demonstrated him putting his hands around Ali's throat. Mr. Bash was remanded into custody, but the charges against him were later dropped following the children's deaths. The judge noted that Mr. Bash's custody meant Ali had no access to funds and was reliant on food banks.
Concerns about Ali's mental health were raised on February 6, 2024, and she was visited by professionals. An assessment under the Mental Health Act was requested but not progressed due to the lack of available hospital beds. The assessment was cancelled on February 9 after Ali appeared to be better and stated she was "back to her normal self."
However, on February 18, a neighbor called emergency services due to concerns about Ali and her children's welfare. Police attended the property and heard "screaming and chanting." They found Ali with self-inflicted stab wounds. Her three children, who had suffered severe injuries, were found deceased in her bed. The judge stated the injuries were consistent with Ali being in a psychotic state.
Ali was taken to Southmead Hospital for surgery and was later transferred to a psychiatric hospital. She told a nurse she had received messages to kill her children but that "no-one died and I asked Allah for forgiveness." Ali was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.
"It is my view that you would not have done what you did if you had been well," the judge told Ali, adding that her actions came as a shock to those who knew her and that she was clearly a loving mother. He acknowledged deficiencies in the assessment of her by mental health services due to the lack of an acute psychiatric bed at the time. The judge concluded by stating that Ali would live with the knowledge of her actions and the loss of her children for the rest of her existence.
