Mother Accused of Stabbing Children Found Screaming in Bushes, Witness Says
A five-year-old boy died and his two siblings were critically injured in an incident where their mother allegedly stabbed them before turning the weapon on herself.
A mother accused of stabbing her three young children, killing one and critically injuring the other two, was found screaming and "thrashing about" in nearby bushes while the youngsters sat silently in a car, a witness has revealed. The alleged incident occurred Sunday afternoon on a quiet street in the Blue Mountains.
Police allege the 42-year-old mother stabbed all three children, aged five and under, before inflicting wounds on herself. The family was discovered after two cyclists and a passing motorist stopped to assist.
Local resident Julie Sukkar, whose home is near the scene, initially mistook the commotion for a traffic accident. Upon investigating, she observed a white four-wheel drive with its doors open, the three children inside, and their mother lying in bushes nearby. "She was covered in blood and had some really bad injuries," Ms. Sukkar told the Daily Mail Australia.
Ms. Sukkar described the children's silence as particularly disturbing. "The children were quiet. They were not screaming or crying. They were not moving," she said.
Paramedics and police arrived quickly. Ms. Sukkar noted that officers initially handcuffed the mother but removed the restraints as she was being taken to an ambulance, recognizing she was not a danger.
Authorities confirmed the family has no known ties to the Blue Mountains and had not previously come to police attention. The children's father was reportedly at work when the incident occurred.
Detectives have been canvassing the neighborhood to establish the mother's movements in the hours leading up to the tragedy. Police are treating the death of the five-year-old boy as a domestic violence incident and consider the mother the sole suspect. They allege the wounds sustained by the mother were self-inflicted. The woman remains in critical condition and has not yet been interviewed by investigators.
Ms. Sukkar credited the bystanders whose quick actions may have saved the lives of the two surviving children. "I think those kids probably wouldn't have survived if they hadn't stopped," she stated.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Ms. Sukkar expressed sympathy for the mother, stating, "To be in that state of mind, I couldn't even imagine it." She added that judging the mother prematurely is unfair, particularly for those who have not experienced mental illness.
