Mother Accused of Killing Husband and Son at Great Wolf Lodge Was Resentful of Child, Family Members Say
Authorities allege Metallica Rose Harrison fatally stabbed her husband and three-year-old son before calling police for help with suicide.
A mother accused of killing her husband and three-year-old son at a Great Wolf Lodge in Pennsylvania harbored resentment toward the child and had expressed that she never wanted to become pregnant, according to family members speaking with investigators.
Metallica Rose Harrison, 27, faces charges of criminal homicide in the deaths of her husband, Charles Harrison, and their son, Tristan. Police discovered the deceased in their hotel room on Monday.
According to a search warrant cited by WNEP, Charles Harrison's mother and sister informed investigators that Metallica Harrison resented her son for diminishing one-on-one time with her husband. The family members also claimed that Harrison was controlling and had prevented them from seeing their son and grandson.
Investigators executed a search warrant at the Harrison family's home in Towanda, where they seized four journals, a laptop, financial records, a toddler's daily planner, and 10 knives with teal handles. The knives did not belong to the Great Wolf Lodge.
An electric shut-off notice from Penelec was found on the family's front door. A relative also stated that Harrison allegedly withdrew funds from Charles's 401(k) to finance their extended stay at the resort, a move that her stepmother, April Thetga, described as "odd." Thetga told the New York Post that she believes Harrison planned the murders in advance.
Harrison called police to the resort on Monday, requesting assistance with suicide because she was unsure where to inflict harm upon herself. Responding officers found her husband with multiple stab wounds to the chest and their son with a single stab wound to the chest.
According to an affidavit, Harrison told the 911 operator that her husband and son were already deceased in the living room bed. "My husband and son are already gone in the bed in the living room. They're already gone, I'm sorry," she stated.
During transport to the hospital, Harrison reportedly told EMS personnel that she was "not supposed to be here" and expressed a desire to have had a "happy family." She inquired about the depth of a wrist vein for "next time" and expressed frustration that her blood had clotted despite taking blood thinners.
Upon her arrest, Harrison stated she would not speak with police because she was "suicidal, not stupid," according to the affidavit.
The family had been staying at the resort since September 21 and had extended their stay. Monroe County District Attorney Mike Mancuso described the incident as a "violent domestic tragedy" and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat. "The investigation continues as we gather further evidence shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this horrendous situation," Mancuso stated.
Great Wolf Lodge issued a statement expressing sadness and confirming cooperation with law enforcement. "It was an isolated family incident, and we're cooperating fully with local law enforcement as they conduct their investigation. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those affected," a spokesperson said.
Harrison has been charged with two counts of criminal homicide. Online records do not indicate if she has entered a plea or obtained legal representation.
