Sandra Imiela, a mother from Vienna, Austria, who is approaching 40, frequently finds herself mistaken for her 14-year-old daughter's sister. This ongoing confusion has led to a variety of awkward and sometimes frustrating situations, including being treated as inexperienced in professional settings.

Imiela, who was 26 when she became pregnant with her daughter Sophie Louise, explained that the mix-ups have become commonplace over the past few years. While she finds the comments about her youthful appearance flattering, they can also be a source of frustration. "In casual settings, it's no issue," Imiela said. "But in professional situations, it can be frustrating when people don't take you seriously or automatically assume you're inexperienced because they think you're much younger."

She recounted an incident at a podiatrist's office where she was lectured about toenail care for "young people these days." Only after revealing her age did the attitude change. Similar assumptions occurred even when Sophie Louise was born, with strangers giving her judgmental stares, believing she was a teenage mother, or mistaking her for a babysitter.

One particularly humorous event took place during a family trip to the Philippines. Hotel staff initially mistook Imiela's husband for someone traveling with his young girlfriend and her sister, requiring Imiela to present her ID to prove their relationship.

Social interactions at Sophie Louise's school have also presented challenges, with other parents initially mistaking Imiela for her daughter's nanny. "When they found out I’m actually her mum, they were surprised and curious. They want to know my secrets," she said.

Imiela largely attributes her appearance to "good old Polish genes," noting that her parents and sister also appear younger than their age. While she admits to not always having the healthiest diet, she maintains an active lifestyle with weekly hot Pilates and four strength training sessions per week, along with a consistent skincare routine. She also noted that she has not had cosmetic procedures like Botox or fillers, partly due to an allergic reaction, and believes she looked older with them anyway.

Despite the frequent mix-ups, Imiela does not take her appearance for granted. "Growing older is a privilege," she stated. "For me, it's more important to enjoy every year I'm lucky enough to have. I want to stay healthy, active and able to enjoy life for as long as possible. And if I get mistaken as a 20-year-old in the process, then win-win."
