Most Comfortable Cars for Every Budget Revealed

Comfort behind the wheel is a key consideration for many car buyers, with some prioritizing a smooth ride over sharp handling or sporty performance. Experts have identified the most comfortable new cars available across various budget levels, ranging from the compact Citroen C3 to the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Small Cars

The Citroen C3, priced between £19,870 and £24,695, offers a comfortable and efficient ride in petrol, hybrid, and electric versions. Its compact size is suitable for urban driving, while the hybrid option provides a range of up to 528 miles. According to Steve Walker of Auto Express, Citroën vehicles often feature hydraulic bump stops and Advanced Comfort seats, which contribute to a more comfortable experience even in their budget models.

The Cupra Raval, with prices from £26,995 to £36,310, is an all-electric five-door supermini that balances sportiness with comfort. Optional adaptive dampers allow for 15 levels of firmness, enabling drivers to adjust the suspension for either a sportier drive or a more relaxing ride.

Another retro-inspired EV, the Renault 4, is available from £23,445 to £29,445. Aimed at a broader audience than the Renault 5, it offers practicality with a 420-liter boot and a range of up to 248 miles. Its softer suspension and taller tire sidewalls enhance the ride quality, particularly on uneven surfaces.

For those seeking a small electric SUV, the Volvo EX30, ranging from £33,060 to £45,860, delivers comfort and style. With a range of up to 304 miles and fast-charging capabilities, it offers a quiet cabin with minimal wind or road noise. While the ride can feel firm on 20-inch wheels, opting for 18-inch wheels provides a good balance of comfort and control, complemented by comfortable seating.

Family Cars

In the family car segment, the Audi A6 e-tron, priced from £62,590 to £82,815, offers refinement and a well-judged ride, even on models with 21-inch wheels. Available in rear-wheel-drive and sporty S6 e-tron versions, it boasts impressive electric ranges of up to 468 miles. Despite some road noise from the wide tires, overall refinement is excellent thanks to its electric powertrain.

The Citroen C5 Aircross, starting at £31,030, is a family SUV that prioritizes a relaxing drive, available as hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric models. It features Citroën's hydraulic bump stops and Advanced Comfort seats, along with sophisticated suspension that excels at absorbing bumps and rough road surfaces.

Mercedes' all-electric GLC, with prices from £55,495 to £73,350, represents a significant improvement over its previous EQ SUV models. It offers a comfortable and balanced ride, with standard steel springs providing good comfort and body control. Models with Airmatic air suspension further enhance this, utilizing Car-to-X technology to proactively adjust the suspension for road imperfections. The quiet electric powertrain and impressive interior contribute to a relaxed driving experience.

The Skoda Superb, ranging from £37,080 to £50,625, provides ample space for passengers and cargo, with 645 liters of luggage capacity. It offers a wonderfully cossetting ride, with excellent refinement and minimal wind or road noise. Optional adaptive dampers allow for suspension adjustment, and the plug-in hybrid version offers up to 84 miles of quiet, electric-only driving.

Luxury Cars

At the pinnacle of automotive comfort is the Rolls-Royce Phantom, with prices typically exceeding £500,000. This bespoke luxury vehicle features extensive sound-deadening, foam-filled tires, and a silky-smooth V12 engine. Its air suspension works in conjunction with the Flagbearer system, which scans the road ahead to prepare the suspension for bumps.

The Range Rover, priced from £107,530 to £149,710, combines luxury, on-road refinement, and off-road capability. Opting for laminated side glass and avoiding larger wheels enhances cabin quietness. Sophisticated air suspension smooths out bumps, and a plug-in hybrid version offers a relaxing electric-only mode. The upcoming Range Rover Electric is expected to further elevate refinement.

Mercedes-Benz's S-Class, available from £103,450 to £226,795, offers a luxurious and smooth ride comparable to the Phantom but at a lower price point. Standard air suspension uses data from other vehicles to anticipate and prepare for road imperfections. The optional Rear Comfort Package Plus provides reclining rear seats for ultimate passenger relaxation.
