A Morton Salt mine, located approximately 2,000 feet beneath Lake Erie, has been forced to cease operations following a significant water leak. The incident, which occurred last week in Painesville, Ohio, led to the flooding of the underground facility and a subsequent shutdown.

At least 77 mine workers were laid off as a result of the closure. Federal mine inspectors are currently on-site to investigate the cause of the "water intrusion." It remains unclear if the mine will reopen.

The leak has already impacted the supply chain for road salt, delaying deliveries that were scheduled to begin this week. Northeast Ohio counties, preparing for winter weather, are now facing disruptions to their salt supplies.

The salt mine has been operational since 1992 and is situated about 2,000 feet below Lake Erie, with rock and sediment separating it from the lake. No injuries were reported during the flooding event.
