Moritz Wagner Aims to Be Disruptive Defensive Force for Nets

The Brooklyn Nets have acquired veteran center Moritz Wagner, who aims to be a disruptive defensive presence, providing a different look from their previous big men. While not a traditional shot-blocker, Wagner's defensive approach emphasizes aggressiveness and activity on the ball, a style he believes will suit him well under new coach Jordi Fernández.

Wagner, 29, who was signed from the Orlando Magic, stated his preference for being "disruptive and active on the ball." He acknowledged he is not a rim protector like Anthony Davis but focuses on contesting shots and creating turnovers. "I like to be aggressive early, and I want to be disruptive and be able to make people speed up and take charges and stuff like that," Wagner said. "So I’m actually extremely excited about that stuff because it plays a little more towards my strength."

The Nets' defensive strategy under Fernández is intended to be aggressive, playing higher up the court to force turnovers. This contrasts with Orlando's strategy, which focused more on defending the rim and dominating the glass. Wagner's signing for a two-year, $19 million deal aligns with this approach, prioritizing his ability to be a vocal defender and a "shotmaker."

Coach Fernández expressed confidence in the team's defensive identity, stating, "we’re going to stick with what we believe works. … Then the more you grow, the more you can expand your coverages. So we’re going to be an aggressive team on both ends of the floor."

Wagner also expressed enthusiasm for playing in New York, a city he feels a connection to, comparing Brooklyn to his hometown of Berlin. He is accustomed to the city and uses public transportation frequently. "I’ve spent a lot of time in New York. This is somewhat of a home to me in America just because it reminds me a lot of where I’m from," Wagner said.

His presence in Brooklyn also raises the possibility of reuniting with his younger brother, Franz Wagner, who currently plays for the Orlando Magic. Franz Wagner recently spoke about the adjustment of playing without his brother, his teammate for his entire NBA career thus far. While their reunion in Brooklyn is speculative, Moritz's move to New York could influence future roster decisions for both teams.
