An increasing number of women are making the decision to remain childfree, citing a complex interplay of financial realities, career ambitions, and evolving societal views. For some, like 33-year-old account manager Chy from the Midlands, the choice stems from a desire to prioritize personal growth and career advancement.
"Wanting to focus on a career is one of the key reasons women choose not to have children," according to a report by the CSJ. A 2023 survey of over 1,500 women aged 18-35 in the UK, commissioned by the New Social Covenant Unit, found that 38% of those who did not wish to become mothers cited career advancement as their primary reason. Chy expressed that having children would make pursuing her career and travel goals significantly more challenging.
Financial considerations also play a crucial role. The same CSJ report indicated that almost half of the surveyed women pointed to the high cost of childcare as a deterrent to having children. Additionally, 41% stated they would need to move into a larger home before considering starting a family.
Chy noted that the current support systems for mothers, including parental leave policies and the expense of childcare, make it difficult for women to maintain a life beyond motherhood. She shared an anecdote about a friend who had to reduce her work hours to manage school drop-offs and pick-ups, suggesting that improved systems could influence such decisions.
"If those systems were to change, maybe my decision could have been swayed earlier on," Chy stated. The CSJ report advocates for greater societal and public policy recognition of the role of motherhood, suggesting it was held in higher esteem in the 20th century.
Cultural expectations can also present challenges. Chy, who comes from an African background, described facing shock and disbelief from some relatives who believe women are expected to have children. She personally feels she would not be comfortable being responsible for a child and does not believe she could provide the necessary abundance of love.
Concerns about the environment have also been cited by women as a reason for choosing not to have children, alongside financial constraints, according to BBC News reporting.
