More than 100 Dachshunds participated in the fourth annual Munich Dachshund Race in Germany this past weekend. The event, which has grown from 30 initial entries to 150, featured the short-legged dogs competing over a 40-meter course.
The dogs were divided into different weight classes before racing down a blue mat to the cheers of spectators and their owners. Owners lined the finish line, encouraging their canine competitors with treats and toys.
Despite their famously short legs, Dachshunds were originally bred for hunting badgers and small game, and are not necessarily slower than other breeds. Organizers reported that older Dachshunds may see a decrease in speed due to age, fatigue, or joint and spinal conditions such as arthritis.
