More Men Seeking Facelifts Reflect Shifting Attitudes on Cosmetic Surgery

Facelifts, once predominantly associated with women, are increasingly being sought by men, with some surgeons reporting that male patients are initiating these procedures independently. This trend reflects a broader cultural shift in how men view and approach cosmetic surgery, with a greater comfort in seeking treatments to enhance their appearance.

Surgeons note that many male patients feel a disconnect between their active, youthful self-perception and their appearance in the mirror, which they feel looks older or more tired. "I still felt young and active, but in photos I looked older and more tired than I felt," said one patient of Dr. Anthony Admire, a board-certified plastic surgeon. The primary goal for these men is not to appear decades younger, but rather to achieve a more refreshed and rested look that better reflects their internal sense of vitality.

Key Concerns for Male Patients

The most common areas of concern for men undergoing facelifts are the neck and jawline. Unlike women who may focus on fine lines or wrinkles, men often notice structural changes that affect the lower face, softening the jawline and blurring the distinction between the face and neck. "The specific complaints are a jawline that has lost its border, fullness under the chin that persists regardless of weight or training, vertical banding in the neck and jowling that breaks the line between the jaw and the neck," explained Dr. Daniel Gould, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Patients often find that less invasive treatments like Botox, fillers, or lasers cannot adequately address these deeper structural issues.

Pre- and Post-Surgery Expectations

A significant concern for men considering a facelift is the potential for an unnatural or obvious result. "It’s probably their biggest psychological barrier to surgery. Men will frequently tell me, ‘I don’t want anyone to know I did this,’" said Admire. The desire is for a subtle enhancement that makes them appear healthier and more rested, rather than dramatically altered.

Surgical techniques aim to achieve these natural-looking results by avoiding tension on the skin, carefully planning incisions around facial hair patterns, and performing conservative work on the midface and brow. The objective is to create a structurally sound jawline and neck while ensuring the facial features remain harmonious and characteristic of the individual.

Post-surgery, the recovery process is crucial for achieving subtle outcomes. While initial swelling can obscure the final result, patients often express satisfaction when the swelling subsides and they see a refreshed appearance without looking like a different person. Many report that friends and colleagues notice a positive change, such as appearing happier or well-rested, without being able to pinpoint that cosmetic surgery was performed. Some patients are able to return to work within two to three weeks, with minimal notice from others that they have undergone a procedure.
