Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12, had promising futures that were tragically cut short when they were killed along with six other family members in a shooting and subsequent fire at a home in Billings, Montana, on August 23. The perpetrator was identified as Alan Smith, 44, a relative of the victims.
Honoring Landon and Charlotte
Landon was remembered as a thoughtful, affectionate, sarcastic, witty, and intelligent young man. He enjoyed Marvel movies, gaming, and live music, and was known for his humor. Landon participated in various activities, including soccer, baseball, and wrestling, despite having no prior experience in the latter. He also played the trumpet in the Senior High Symphonic band and was a chess player. At the time of his death, Landon was anticipating his sophomore year of high school, preparing for his driver's license, and looking forward to a Sustainability Living Tour in Germany and Switzerland. He had expressed a desire to work in a trade.
Charlotte was described as a bright, quirky, and intuitive soul who developed into a fiercely independent and curious individual. Her obituary notes her genuine curiosity about the world, her fearlessness in asking questions, and her ability to stand firm in her beliefs while remaining selfless and sensitive to others. Charlotte had a particular fondness for animals and insects, especially cows and bugs, and loved her dogs, Macy and Ingrid. She pursued a variety of interests including crocheting, painting, diamond art, paddle boarding, and playing the violin. She also participated in soccer, gymnastics, dance, Ninja Warrior, and jiu-jitsu, and had planned to start wrestling like her brother.
Charlotte demonstrated significant bravery during the incident, calling 911 when Smith began shooting. Gunshots could be heard in the background of the call. Within minutes, the house was set on fire. For her actions, Charlotte will posthumously receive the Youth Peace and Justice Foundation's National Heroism Award.
The Wider Family Tragedy
The victims included Landon and Charlotte's step-mother, Megan Ghekiere, and their step-siblings Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, seven. Their father, Adam Ghekiere, was working at the time of the massacre. Megan was remembered as a devoted mother whose children, Owen and Chloe, were the center of her world. She was described as kind-hearted, genuine, and loving, with a knack for making others feel accepted. Megan had previously divorced her ex-husband, Brad Ireland, and moved to Montana with her children, where she met and married Adam Ghekiere. Megan's parents, Barbara and Dana Smith, also moved to Billings to be near their daughter, as did their grandmother, Evelyn.
Alan Smith had also relocated to Billings. According to reports, he had become reclusive and was living with his parents, leading to tension in the household. His parents had reportedly asked him to leave their home a few weeks prior to the incident, and they believed he was staying out of state.
The Incident
The family's weekly dinner, typically held on Fridays, was moved to Sunday, August 23, due to Adam Ghekiere's work schedule and a child's sleepover. Smith allegedly barged into his parents' home around 5:49 p.m. Neighbors reported hearing what they thought were fireworks about 11 minutes later. At 6:02 p.m., dispatchers received a call from inside the house. Responding officers arrived at 6:12 p.m. to find the residence engulfed in flames and heard gunfire from within. Officers located Smith outside the burning house, and a deputy heard a final, distinct shot around 6:13 p.m., believed to be Smith taking his own life. The fire consumed the residence, trapping the victims inside.
Brad Ireland, father of Owen and Chloe, has stated that there were warning signs about Smith's behavior, asserting that many people had spoken out but their concerns were not heeded. He described Smith as having spent his days alone in his room, isolated and unable to maintain employment despite holding a degree. While Smith had reportedly been verbally abusive, there were no prior arrests or criminal charges against him.
