A significant heat dome is currently enveloping the southern United States, placing more than 50 million people across seven states under extreme heat warnings or advisories issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). The high-pressure system is expected to persist for several days, with temperatures in some areas projected to exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

Texas is anticipated to bear the brunt of the extreme weather, with major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Lubbock, Odessa, and El Paso facing intense heat. In Arizona, Phoenix and Tucson are expected to see afternoon temperatures ranging from 106 to 118 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the week. Southern California cities such as San Diego and Los Angeles, along with Shreveport, Louisiana, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, are also under warnings for a dangerous combination of extreme heat and high humidity.

The NWS has classified the conditions in Texas as 'major' or 'extreme' on its five-stage heat risk guidance chart, indicating severe conditions that include a lack of overnight relief. These conditions pose a significant risk to individuals without air conditioning or those who do not take adequate precautions to stay hydrated while outdoors.

In California, heat warnings are expected to remain in effect until Wednesday, while in Arizona, the life-threatening weather is forecast to last until Saturday night. The prolonged exposure to such high temperatures raises concerns about heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can be fatal.

The National Weather Service defines an Extreme Heat Warning as a period of very hot temperatures, even by local standards. Forecasters in Texas are bracing for near-record temperatures that could reach 112 degrees Fahrenheit in multiple areas on Monday, impacting approximately 25 million residents within the state alone.

Officials warn that prolonged exposure to these temperatures can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, potentially fatal conditions. Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme heat.
