Monica McNutt Expresses Bewilderment Over Viral Taylor Swift Hot Mic Moment
ESPN analyst Monica McNutt discusses the unexpected leak of her courtside comment about Taylor Swift during the NBA Finals.
ESPN analyst Monica McNutt remains perplexed by the public release of her "hot mic" comment regarding Taylor Swift's attendance at an NBA Finals game. The remark, made during Game 4 of the NBA Finals, resurfaced and led to significant backlash from Swift's fanbase.
During an appearance on "The Pivot" podcast, McNutt described the incident as a "mystifying" hot mic situation that found its way to the public. "I'm still mystified and would love someone to explain how that got to the masses," McNutt stated, referencing the moment she was caught on a live mic at Madison Square Garden.
McNutt's comment, directed at Swift who was seated courtside, was, "She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl." This remark came as the Knicks were in a pivotal playoff series. By the end of Game 4, McNutt was unaware of the extent to which her comment had gone viral and attracted criticism on social media. She learned of the situation when a public relations representative informed her.
On the podcast, McNutt defended her statement, characterizing it as a "throwaway comment." She explained that her remarks were based on observing Swift at a previous Knicks game without wearing team apparel, contrasting it with other celebrity fans who display overt team allegiance. "Again, people that have never had our jobs, you don’t know how a hot mic works, and if you don’t speak with any of the flavor that I speak with, you probably took that comment to heart and it wasn’t even that deep," she added.
Swift had been seen at Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cavaliers with Travis Kelce and later attended Game 4 with the Haim sisters, sporting custom "Stevie Knicks" shirts. McNutt later issued an apology to Swift in a street interview between Games 4 and 5, acknowledging the intense online reaction.
Despite the online controversy, New York Knicks player Jalen Brunson offered support for McNutt following the team's championship victory. During the championship celebrations, Brunson addressed Swift's fans, stating, "She’s a really good one, cut her some slack. It’s all good. I promise." McNutt expressed her appreciation for Brunson's unexpected defense, calling him an "incredible leader."
