Mom Welcomes Baby in KFC Parking Lot, Newborn Nicknamed 'Colonel Cody'
A mother in England gave birth to her son in the parking lot of a KFC restaurant, leading to a fast-food-inspired nickname for the infant.
Katie Murphy, 33, and her partner Stephen Kirby, 32, welcomed their son Cody into the world on August 29 in the parking lot of a KFC in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. The unusual delivery occurred after the couple, who already have a four-year-old daughter, were sent home from the hospital earlier that day when Murphy was told it was too early to deliver.
As they were driving back to the hospital that evening, Murphy realized the baby was coming. Kirby pulled into the parking lot of a KFC restaurant they frequented. "It all happened so fast," Murphy stated. Before paramedics arrived, Kirby caught their newborn son, Cody, who was born at 9:35 p.m. in the car.
The ambulance arrived approximately five minutes later and transported Murphy and Cody to the hospital. Despite his abrupt entrance, baby Cody is healthy and happy. His unique birth circumstances led to the nickname "Colonel Cody," inspired by KFC founder Colonel Sanders.
Murphy joked that they plan to take Cody to KFC for his first birthday and help him get his first weekend job there.
A KFC spokesperson commented on the event, stating, "We're honored to have been the place of Cody's birth and are sending bucket loads of love to the whole family, along with some KFC merch and vouchers to help them celebrate." The spokesperson added that the company looks forward to welcoming the family back for a meal to mark the occasion.
