A Southern California couple welcomed their daughter, Valentina Isla Campbell, in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box last Friday after a rapid labor that they say led to her arrival before they could reach the hospital.
Michelle Cisneros and Darren Campbell recounted the events that led to their daughter's birth 15 days ahead of her due date. Cisneros initially experienced contractions that were five minutes apart, prompting a visit to a nearby hospital. According to the couple, Cisneros was monitored for approximately an hour at Hoag Hospital but was discharged. She was advised to return if contractions became three minutes apart. Shortly after returning home, the couple found that their contractions had indeed intensified to three-minute intervals.
Upon returning to the hospital, Cisneros reported being monitored again for another hour before being discharged a second time. She stated that she was in significant pain and received morphine, with staff suggesting she continue laboring at home and return if necessary. Campbell expressed his concern to hospital staff, recalling telling them they were not leaving and that contractions were three minutes apart, but felt they were dismissed.
As they attempted to return to the hospital, the couple realized they would not make it. They pulled into a Jack in the Box parking lot in Orange County, where they contacted 911. Firefighters arrived and assisted with the delivery of Valentina in the parking lot.
"When I heard her cry, it was just sheer relief," Campbell said. "My worst fears were extinguished."
Cisneros emphasized the importance of women trusting their instincts and advocating for themselves during labor. "Women should know that they can advocate for themselves and they know their body best," she said. "I think it's really important for medical professionals to listen to their patients more."
Hoag Hospital has been contacted for comment. Jack in the Box also did not immediately respond to requests for comment, though reports indicated they offered the family a care package. The family has since returned home with their newborn daughter.
