Cheryl Maguire embarked on a solo luxury vacation to Turks & Caicos after her 21-year-old daughter, Lindsay, realized she had left her passport at her New York City apartment shortly before their flight from Boston.
Maguire had planned the trip as a special mother-daughter getaway, aiming to recreate photos from Lindsay's childhood visits to the island. The holiday was also tied to the grand reopening of a hotel, making it difficult to reschedule.
"The flight was booked, her bags were were packed and then [Lindsay] realized she had left her passport in her New York City apartment," Maguire explained in an essay. "We were flying out of Boston and tried to figure out a way to get it in time, but it just wasn't possible. I decided to leave her behind and go solo."
Maguire stated that changing the trip plans was not an option due to the hotel's event. She noted that her daughter has a history of forgetting items, recalling instances in high school where she had to bring forgotten belongings. Maguire mentioned she had given her daughter one reminder about the passport but questioned if more reminders were necessary.
While Maguire initially felt guilty, especially after seeing her daughter's disappointment via FaceTime, she found ways to enjoy the solo trip. She engaged with other solo travelers and participated in activities, such as a catamaran trip, that her daughter had not expressed interest in. "I spent time with other solo travelers who I probably wouldn't have talked to if my kid had been there," she shared.
Upon returning home, Maguire's daughter was still upset about the forgotten passport. Maguire offered advice on preventing future occurrences and told her daughter, "Look on the bright side, you're only 21, and I can guarantee you'll never forget your passport again."
A screenshot of Maguire's essay shared on X, formerly Twitter, went viral, igniting a widespread discussion about her decision. Many online commentators supported Maguire's choice, arguing that an adult's mistake should not necessarily derail well-laid plans or cause financial loss. Others questioned the mother-daughter dynamic and suggested prioritizing shared experiences.
Maguire concluded that her daughter is now planning their next trip, with the hope that she will remember to bring her passport and her mother.
